About this wine
Character
A cool, tautly built Riesling at 11.0% ABV, vinified dry and designed for tension. The magnum format slows development, preserving the delicate fruit and crisp acidity for longer.
Terroir and origin
The VDP estate Odinstal sits 350 metres above the Rhine valley in a hollow above Wachenheim, surrounded by ten hectares of mixed forest. Across five hectares, four rock types lie close together: basalt from the Pechsteinkopf, shell limestone, Keuper marl and yellow variegated sandstone, a legacy of the Rhine rift faults. There are no neighbouring vineyards, so no spray drift either. Here the vines ripen around twenty days later than usual.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling is the estate's main grape variety and benefits from the cool, elevated site. Estate manager Andreas Schumann, at Odinstal since 2004, farms this monopole strictly biodynamically, Demeter-certified since 2013. In the cellar, non-intervention is the rule: spontaneous fermentation without temperature control, extended lees ageing, minimal use of sulphur. The wines end up as dry as they choose to be.
On the palate
Aromas of lemon peel, green apple and white blossom, alongside a herbal note and mineral coolness. The wine stays crisp and lean, the acidity carries the juicy fruit, and the finish is saline and long.
Highlights
