About this wine

Character

A dry Riesling from Alsace that holds both power and tension. Rich golden yellow with old-gold highlights, on the nose salted lemon, orange blossom oil and bergamot, alongside toasted rice cracker, wet chalk, allspice, pink pepper, light tobacco, pear compote and dried mandarin peel. A wine for large glasses.

Terroir and origin

The Grand Cru site of Brand lies near Turckheim, its granite shaping the wine's mineral contour. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht farms 42 hectares, 11.5 of them across six Grand Cru sites. On the steepest plots, horses are once again at work.

Grape variety and vinification

A varietal Riesling from yields of 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare. At least six months on lees provide the texture, and no wine leaves the cellar before one to two years of ageing. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title Master of Wine, converted the first five hectares to biodynamic farming in 1996.

On the palate

A viscous entry, with a delicate residual sweetness enveloping the mineral core and the acid backbone. Firm structure with good pressure; delicate spice, fine acidity and saline minerality carry the fruit, and the aromas from the nose return on the palate. Still youthfully lean.

Food pairing recommendations

Oven-roasted carrots and parsnips in a light basil velouté, turbot chop on sweet potato purée with ginger and beurre blanc or pork roast braised in milk and sage.

Special features

Bottled in a 1500 ml magnum. The Humbrecht family have been winegrowers since 1620, and since 2019 Pierre Émile Humbrecht has joined as the eleventh generation.
