About this wine

Character

A Riesling with a granitic imprint, showing radiant golden yellow in the glass while still holding back on the nose. Only with vigorous swirling in a decanter does a sea of blossom open up, joined by apricot, candied lemon zest, ginger and lemon balm, sharply accompanied by the minerality of the granite rock.

Terroir and origin

The Grand Cru Brand lies directly above Turckheim on a series of small biotite granite hills, facing south and southeast and ventilated by the wind running down the Munster valley. The granite warms quickly and conducts the sun's heat deep into the soil, giving the site a very early-ripening climate; at the same time, the geology allows the roots to descend deep, to the clay and minerals from the decomposition of the granite. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, farms 42 hectares biodynamically, once again using horses in the steepest vineyards.

Grape variety and vinification

Riesling from old vines, planted when sélection massale was the norm: small bunches and naturally low yields, with millerandage added in 2019. Due to the ripeness of the grapes, fermentation proceeded particularly slowly, and only after twelve months had the wine fully fermented to bone-dry. At least six months of lees contact shapes the texture of the estate's wines.

On the palate

Taut fruit, intense acidity and a salinity that lingers across the tongue. The complexity is already there, while youth and intensity challenge the taster. Those unwilling to wait should decant for several hours and pour into a sufficiently large glass; over several days of being open, it gains in expression. It will only reach its full stature in a few years.

Food pairing suggestions

Goat cheese and grilled peach with crusty baguette, potato-and-pumpkin rösti with anchovy sauce and fennel seeds or sweet-and-sour spicy prawns with papaya and almond rice.

Special features

Magnum with 1500 ml, 13.5% vol., dry. The domaine harvests 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare; no wine leaves the cellar before one to two years of ageing. The Humbrechts have been winegrowers since 1620.
