About this wine

Character

A dry Riesling that expresses its origin through tension rather than opulence. Lemon and white peach lead, followed by herbs and a smoky, mineral note. The 13.0% Vol. carries the whole without pushing warmth to the fore. The magnum format gives the wine more calm for bottle ageing.

Terroir and origin

The Brand near Turckheim is one of six Grand Cru vineyards that Domaine Zind-Humbrecht farms across a total of 11.5 hectares; its granite gives this wine its mineral signature. The estate covers 42 hectares. The Humbrechts have been winegrowers since 1620, and since 2019 Pierre Émile Humbrecht has been working at the estate as the eleventh generation.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, converted the first five hectares to biodynamics in 1996 and describes it as "therapy for the vines to forget stress". Yields range from 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare. At least six months of lees contact give the wine its texture, and no wine leaves the cellar before one to two years of ageing. Bottling takes place in Turckheim.

On the palate

Taut and clearly defined, with vibrant acidity and juicy fruit. The finish stays long and saline.

Distinctive features

1500 ml magnum, dry, 13.0% Vol. Horses are once again at work in the steepest vineyards. In 1981, Léonard Humbrecht became the first winegrower in France to install cooling systems in wooden casks; that spirit of innovation has stayed in the house.
