About this wine
Character
A lusciously sweet Riesling of great density, its sweetness held in shape by a lean, saline-tinged acidity. The 2006 vintage now shows mature fruit and amber tones without losing its drive.
Terroir and origin
The Brand Grand Cru lies near Turckheim and, on granite soil, yields a linear, cool minerality. It is one of six Grand Cru sites farmed by Domaine Zind-Humbrecht across a total of 11.5 hectares, set within 42 hectares of vineyards. Yields range from 30 to 40 hectoliters per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling. Sélection de Grains Nobles denotes the selection of botrytized, shriveled berries, whose noble rot concentrates sugar and extract. At least six months on lees give the wine its texture; no wine leaves the estate's cellar before one to two years of maturation. 12.0% vol.
On the palate
Dense and silky, with mirabelle plum compote and mango, alongside honey and candied pineapple. The acidity from the granite soil keeps the sweetness taut, the finish trails off saline, with orange zest and white pepper.
Food pairings
Classic with foie gras and blue-veined cheeses such as Roquefort, as well as with an apricot tart.
Special features
Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to earn the title Master of Wine, converted the first five hectares to biodynamic farming in 1996; horses once again work the steepest parcels. The Humbrecht family has been growing wine since 1620, and since 2019 the eleventh generation, Pierre Émile Humbrecht, carries the estate forward.
