About this wine

Character

The Riesling Furstentum Grand Cru 2021 from Domaine Albert Mann is an uncompromisingly dry Alsatian white wine of chalky structure: 2 grams of residual sugar against 7.2 grams of acidity, at 13.5% vol. Sinewy, invigorating, demanding.

Terroir and origin

The Grand Cru site Furstentum in Kientzheim was first mentioned in 1330. The Riesling vines there grow on south-facing limestone slopes and were planted in 1990. Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé have farmed their 25 hectares from Wettolsheim biodynamically since 1997, using horses instead of tractors on the steepest plots.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling. Fermentation and ageing take place in stainless steel; the wine matures on full lees and is bottled unfiltered. The 2021 vintage was largely dry, interrupted by a very wet June; by August the grapes had taken on a golden colour. Plenty of fruit, low sugar yield, fine acid structure.

On the palate

The nose is crystal clear and pure: white peach, vine peach, nashi pear and grapefruit, followed by wet chalk and cold smoke. Alongside these, an array of aromatic herbs ranges from lemon balm through coriander and mint to sage and thyme, underscored by a vegetal note of green peas and fennel. On the palate it flows cool and linear, racy, with a fruity core; fine phenolics build tension. The finish carries the herbal notes for minutes.

Food pairings

Crisp pan-fried pikeperch with Riesling sauerkraut and salt potatoes, char tartare with radishes, chives and herb emulsion, or, for a vegetarian option, steamed salsify with passion fruit and lentil falafel.

Special features

The Barthelmés farm vines across six Grand Cru sites, spread over nearly a hundred plots. In 2012 they were named Winemakers of the Year. Antoine, their son, now works alongside them.
