About this wine
Character
A dry Riesling that is both taut and juicy: the invigorating acidity sets the direction, the yellow fruit fills it out. Freshly opened, it still shows reserved; in the carafe it comes to life. At 12.5% alcohol, none of this feels heavy.
Terroir and origin
The Goldloch is a VDP.Grosse Lage on the Nahe, spanning thirteen hectares of gravelly loam. The highly gravelly primary rock soils date from the Permian period and produce juicy Rieslings with a pronounced yellow-fruit character and a hint of flint. As early as 1901 the site was documented as first-class, long before the VDP classification system existed.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Riesling from Schlossgut Diel in Burg-Layen. The grapes are gently pressed, fermentation is carried out by natural yeasts, and the wine is then aged for a long time in multi-year large oak casks from local oak forests. Multi-year here means: no oak flavour, but texture.
On the palate
After a little air, grapefruit, green apple and mirabelle plum over smoky minerality, later wild herbs, verbena and ginger. On the palate, Granny Smith, apricot and citrus, accompanied by a saline, mineral undertone. An invigorating Riesling with very good ageing potential.
Special features
Caroline Diel runs the VDP estate in its seventh generation, 26 hectares across three Grosse Lagen, each with its own geological fingerprint. She studied oenology in Geisenheim, took over the cellar in 2006, and has led the estate since 2017 together with her husband Sylvain and her brother Victor. Falstaff, Feinschmecker and the FAZ have named her Winemaker of the Year. She is driving the estate's conversion to organic viticulture.
