About this wine
Character
A noble sweet Riesling whose concentration never plays out as heaviness. The dense sweetness is given direction by a vibrant acidity, and at 8.5% Vol. alcohol, the wine stays light on the palate.
Terroir and origin
The Schlossberg lies north of Kaysersberg on a large granite outcrop of the Vosges massif and ranks among Alsace's most famous sites, documented as far back as the late Middle Ages. The vineyard is steep, facing due south, and stretches from 230 to 400 metres in altitude. The soils are sandy, siliceous and rich in minerals.
Grape variety and winemaking
Riesling, and only Riesling: in the Schlossberg, Domaine Albert Mann grows exclusively this variety. Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé, brothers-in-law from Wettolsheim, converted their 25 hectares to biodynamic farming in 1997. On the steepest plots, they work with horses instead of tractors, so as not to compact the soil and to let the roots reach deeper. Sweet wines are only made when a vintage allows for it.
On the palate
In the glass, a pale, sparkling golden yellow, deepening towards the rim. The nose brings together sweet citrus fruit, fresh mint and ginger, followed by pineapple and mango, framed by elderflower and acacia blossom. On the palate, the intense sweetness meets a vibrant acidity, underpinned by a saline minerality that carries the long finish.
Food pairing recommendations
With prawns in a spicy tandoori crust with passion fruit ragout, a caramelised lime tart with meringue, or baked Fourme d'Ambert with honey-glazed pineapple.
Special features
The domaine farms nearly a hundred plots across six Grand Cru sites; in 2012 the Barthelmé brothers were named winemakers of the year. This noble sweet Riesling comes in a 375 ml bottle.
