About this wine
Character
A nobly sweet Spätlese that stays light-footed at 7.5% ABV, its sweetness resting on ripe acidity. In its youthful stage it feels reserved, beneath a layer of compact minerality. Air and a decanter open it up.
Terroir and origin
The slopes of the Pündericher Marienburg on the Mosel face south, southwest and southeast, so sunshine is plentiful. The soil consists mainly of weathered grey slate, which lends taut elegance; at Clemens Busch, the capsule colour indicates the slate type. The vines, over 30 years old, sail through dry spells without difficulty.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling. For the Goldkapsel, Clemens Busch selects fully ripe grapes with around 10 percent botrytis. Fermentation proceeds spontaneously in an old oak cask; at around 7.5% by volume, the wine is chilled and racked off the lees. The Prädikat wines are typically bottled in May, without cultured yeasts, without enzymes, without fining.
On the palate
Once decanted, apple, lemon, sweet pear, ripe pineapple, blossom honey and elderflower emerge, finely interwoven. On the tongue, the juicy pale fruit wraps around the pronounced minerality, and the sweetness, despite its richness, stays elegant. The interplay of sweetness and acidity carries far and promises many years in the cellar.
Food pairing
With piquant blue cheese, fruity desserts with citrus notes and spicy Asian dishes.
Special features
Clemens Busch gave up herbicides in 1976 and has farmed biodynamically since 1986; 11 of his 20 hectares of steep slopes lie within the Marienburg. In its youth, this Riesling benefits from decanting.
