About this wine
Character
A wine of structure and texture with great clarity and precision, combining playful lightness with seriousness. For Kai Schätzel, the 7.5 percent alcohol is not a concession to fashion but a conviction: light, precise, with inner tension. The 2016 is still very young and built to spend a few years disappearing into the cellar.
Terroir and origin
The Pettenthal lies on the Roter Hang near Nierstein in Rheinhessen, where the Schätzel family has worked its parcels since 1350. The red-brown clay slate of the Rotliegend shapes the steep slopes and reappears in the wine as an earthy, almost salty minerality. The Pettenthal is one of the estate's VDP.GROSSE LAGEN.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling. For the Kabinett, the vineyards are harvested up to six times, early and with extreme selection. This is followed by gentle pressing over 20 hours, spontaneous fermentation in a large oak cask in the more than 800-year-old cellar, and up to two years of ageing before bottling.
On the palate
The nose is distinctive: apple and apple must, citrus fruit, flint, damp rock dust, yeast and a hint of petrol. On the palate it is forceful and juicy, pale in stone fruit and citrus, with a dark, earthy minerality beneath. The fine acidity balances the sweetness, leaving a salty note.
Food recommendations
Langoustine with apple ice-wine foam and chicory, grilled chicken with lemongrass, fennel, coriander and ginger, or quail in olive oil and ras el hanout.
Special features
An auction wine. Kai Schätzel has run the family estate since 2008; it has been a VDP member since 2016 and Demeter-certified since 2023; the label carries the Demeter logo.
