About this wine

Character

A dry Riesling of density and poise. At 12.5% ABV, it draws its power from acidity and extract rather than alcohol, and stays true to its line over the years.

Terroir and origin

The Grand Cru Rangen de Thann rises above the small town of Thann and, at a 68-degree gradient, is Alsace's steepest vineyard site. Its 5.5 hectares of volcanic rock produce wines of striking mineral intensity. The Clos-Saint-Urbain forms the heart of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht; on the steepest plots, horses once again do the work.

Grape variety and vinification

A pure Riesling from biodynamic farming: in 1996, Olivier Humbrecht converted the first five hectares. Yields sit between 30 and 40 hectoliters per hectare. At least six months on the lees give the wine its texture, and no vintage leaves the cellar before one to two years of ageing.

On the palate

The nose offers ripe lemon, cool smoke and wet stone, with a herbaceous spice. The palate is dense and focused, the acidity racy, the finish long and dry.

Food pairings

Pairs with roasted pikeperch on lentils, scallops in lemon butter and veal sweetbreads. Also excellent with steamed turbot and aged mountain cheese.

Notable facts

Olivier Humbrecht was the first Frenchman to earn the title of Master of Wine. The Humbrecht family has made wine since 1620, and since 2019 Pierre Émile Humbrecht has joined as the eleventh generation.
