About this wine

Character

A dry Riesling from Alsace, shaped by limestone. Dense yet never heavy, carried by freshness and elegance, with 13.0% vol. and a precise, long, mineral finish.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from several small vineyards in Gueberschwihr, south of Colmar. They grow on limestone-sandstone marl, facing east or south on a gentle slope, a moderately late-ripening terroir. Olivier Humbrecht's father planted these vines in the 1960s and 1970s; they bear fruit consistently year after year and barely suffer from water shortage or excessive heat.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling. The 2020 harvest was early and very healthy, with a slow fermentation that finished in a very dry balance. Until bottling, the wine rested on full lees in large old oak casks.

On the palate

Intense golden yellow in the glass. On the nose, limestone comes to the fore, alongside vineyard peach, citrus fruit and earthy, mineral notes. On the palate it is fruity and refreshing, marked by a chalky note and juicy fruit, with a long, precise finish. The ageing potential is excellent.

Food pairings

Sea bass carpaccio with lime oil and basil, pumpkin gnocchi with grapefruit sauce and thyme or lamb skewers with pomelo-yoghurt sauce.

Special features

Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, farms 42 hectares; in 1996 he converted the first five hectares to biodynamic viticulture. Yields range from 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare. Decant the wine if possible and drink from large glasses.
