About this wine
Character
The Wineck-Schlossberg gives Domaine Albert Mann a Riesling that is fine, almost ethereal, gaining intensity on the palate. Its energy comes from acidity rather than power: neither sharp nor austere, but elegant and almost silky.
Terroir and origin
The vineyard covers 27.49 hectares across the communes of Katzenthal and Ammerschwihr, rising from 280 to 400 metres. The south-southeast-facing site sits in the hollow of a small, enclosed valley sheltered from the wind, with granite soils. The vines were planted in 1957, 1966 and 1974.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling, vinified dry, 13.5% vol. Domaine Albert Mann in Wettolsheim is run by brothers-in-law Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé, with Maurice overseeing the cellar and Jacky the vineyards. They have worked biodynamically since 1997, using horses rather than tractors on the steepest plots. These parcels are still in transition toward organic and biodynamic certification, as the vineyard was previously farmed organically.
On the palate
On the nose, ripe Riesling with a touch of muscat, alongside ripe, soft apples, yellow pears, blossom, herbs and a hint of salted lemon. On the palate the wine stays delicate yet grows denser. The granite lends the fruit a crystalline, vibrant acid structure and minerality.
Food pairings
Radish carpaccio with soured milk, olive oil and fresh oregano, risotto with prawns and lime, or Arctic cod (skrei) with an aniseed-lemon beurre blanc and spring vegetables.
Special features
This is only the second vintage of this Grand Cru. The first was bottled exclusively in magnums and remains very rare.
