About this wine
Character
A rosé de saignée that draws its colour from 16 hours of skin contact and nothing else: no dosage, no malolactic fermentation. The nose brings together candied rose and violet petals, blood orange, kumquat zest, pomegranate juice, wild strawberries and redcurrants, layered with herbal and mineral spice.
Terroir and origin
The Tempêtée single vineyard lies in Œuilly at 158 metres, facing northeast, with a 13 percent slope. The soil is calcareous clay. Benoît and Mélanie Tarlant farm the estate's 14 hectares organically, without herbicides or synthetic pesticides.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Pinot Noir from vines planted in 1981 by Denise, Geo, Micheline and Jean-Mary Tarlant: 13 clones across 13 rows. Harvested on 3 September 2018, followed by 16 hours of skin contact and slow gravity pressing. Spontaneous fermentation, seven months' lees ageing in Burgundian pièces, no malolactic fermentation. Bottled on 5 April 2019, disgorged on 3 June 2024 with 0 g dosage.
On the palate
Chalky, cool texture, with crisp, brilliant acidity that comes as a surprise for 2018: the hottest vintage of the past hundred years. Bone-dry and precisely driving. With air, a note develops that recalls kriek with Schaerbeek cherries.
Food pairings
A fine companion to main courses, as well as to cheese and to desserts that aren't overly sweet.
Highlights
3,700 bottles. Champagne Tarlant has existed since 1687 and is now run by the twelfth generation; since the 1970s the house has bottled without dosage, and today over 90 percent of production is Brut Nature.
