About this wine

Character

A slender, juicy red wine from Bierzo that draws its impact from freshness rather than weight. Fine tannins, vibrant acidity and 12.5% vol. define the cool 2021 vintage in Bierzo.

Terroir and origin

The vines for this single-parcel wine grow at 600 metres altitude on clay soil in D.O. Bierzo, where Atlantic and continental influences meet and Mencía reaches its full potential. Lía Fariña founded Sangarida in 2019; she comes from the family behind Attis Bodegas y Viñedos in Rías Baixas, with her mother from Bierzo. She is advised by Jean-François Hébrard.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Mencía, the principal grape variety of Bierzo. After harvest, the grapes are destemmed in the cellar and fermented spontaneously. Ageing lasts twelve months in a 225-litre and a 500-litre oak barrel, both third-use, so the oak stays in the background.

On the palate

Transparent cherry red in the glass, topped by a fragrant bouquet of cherry and violet with smoky, mineral, almost meaty depth. The body stays slender, the tannins fine, the red fruit juicy. Vibrant acidity carries through to an invigorating finish.

Food pairings

Air-dried beef ham (Cecina de Vaca, a Bierzo speciality) is the obvious match. For a vegetarian option, a Mediterranean pasta salad with sun-dried tomatoes works well.

Special features

The winery bottles fewer than 1000 bottles of this single-parcel wine. Sangarida has only been working in Bierzo since 2019, and El Morredero already shows what the project is aiming for: clarity and a distinctly Atlantic profile.
