About this wine

Character

A lean, taut Mencía from D.O. Bierzo: clear red fruit, fine spice, silky tannin. Dry, 13.5% vol.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from a selection of very old vineyards near the Pico Tuerto, one of the region's highest mountains and the wine's namesake. The plots sit at an average of around 600 metres, the soils are predominantly clay-based, and the climate is continental-Atlantic in character.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Mencía from vines well over 100 years old that consequently yield very little fruit. In the cellar, the grapes are fully destemmed and spontaneously fermented, after which the wine matures for 12 months in 500-litre oak barrels.

On the palate

The nose shows crisp sour cherry and floral notes, underpinned by a cool, stony minerality. On the palate it is juicy and finely spiced, with silky tannins and a polished texture, carried by vibrant acidity. The finish is long and delicately spiced.

Food pairings

With crispy grilled pork belly and grilled vegetables.

Special features

Sangarida is the Bierzo project of the family behind Attis Bodegas y Viñedos in the Rías Baixas. Lía Fariña has run the estate since 2019, advised by Jean-François Hébrard. The name comes from Greek mythology: a tree nymph who won Attis's heart.
