The Schlossberg Achkarren Grauburgunder GG 2023 from Franz Keller grows in the heart of the Achkarrer Schlossberg on the Kaiserstuhl, on calcareous tuff, and for this grape variety favours acidity and structure over sheer volume.

About this wine
Character
A Grauburgunder that opens with presence and complexity without ever becoming loud. The fruit swings between yellow and red accents: wild raspberry, unripe mango, quince, yellow peach and baked apple, tightly interwoven with a racy spiciness of dried bay leaf, marjoram, juniper and white pepper. Added to this are woodsy notes of pine needles, a touch of smoke and doughy, nutty accents of marzipan, almond blossom and chopped almonds. The aromatic structure remains deliberately elusive.
Terroir and origin
The parcel lies in the heart of the Achkarrer Schlossberg, steep and sheltered from the wind, on calcareous tuff. The Schlossberg is one of the six VDP Grosse Lagen of the Franz Keller estate, which has worked the Kaiserstuhl since 1892 and has been run since 2016 by Friedrich Keller, the fourth generation.
Grape variety and vinification
The base is a Grauburgunder of old genetic stock, propagated within the parcel by massal selection. Ageing lasts 12 months in large wood followed by a further 6 months in stainless steel tank, each time on full lees. The winery, completed in 2013 and built into the slope in terraces, allows for gentle, gravity-flow ageing. 12.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
Racy and precise, carried by a pronounced acidity that sets new benchmarks for the grape variety. This acidity overtakes the fine tannic and phenolic structure, with a crystal-clear acid drive at mid-palate. The fruit recedes in its youth, staying within the pome-fruit spectrum and flashing occasionally toward red: wild raspberry, redcurrant. The wine pushes forward powerfully, without breadth or opulence, the mouthfeel is crisp and astringent. On the finish it opens up brightly with freshly cut pear.
Special features
A Grosses Gewächs that positions the grape variety differently: not opulent fruit, but acid line, spice and texture. Friedrich Keller is gradually converting the estate to organic farming with biodynamic elements, and the work in the cellar follows the principle "as little as possible, as much as necessary."
