About this wine

Character

This Pinot Gris favors contour over fullness: dry, built with a lean 12.5% Vol., taut acidity and a saline streak that carries through to the finish.

Terroir and origin

The Achkarrer Schlossberg is one of six VDP Grand Cru vineyards worked by Friedrich Keller and his team in the Kaiserstuhl. The vines grow on volcanic soil, which gives the wine a substantial texture and a cool, smoky minerality. The warmth of Baden and the coolness of the hillside site meet here.

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Gris, harvested and matured according to the principle of "as little as possible, as much as necessary." Since 2013, the terraced hillside winery has operated on the gravity-flow principle, with technology kept discreetly in the background. Friedrich Keller is gradually converting the estate to organic viticulture with biodynamic elements.

On the palate

First ripe pear, quince and apricot, followed by hazelnut and a touch of herbal spice. The fine-grained acidity holds together the dense yellow stone fruit, and the finish stays long, saline and mineral.

Food pairings

Recommended with brined trout, veal schnitzel with lemon, porcini risotto and aged hard cheese, as well as with tender roast veal and asparagus with hollandaise sauce.

Special features

VDP Grosses Gewächs from the Achkarrer Schlossberg. Since 1892, the Franz Keller estate has combined top-tier gastronomy with winemaking; the restaurant Schwarzer Adler has held a Michelin star continuously for over 55 years, with Irma Keller as its first German female star chef. Around 400,000 bottles are produced annually across 35 hectares.
