About this wine

Character

A Spätburgunder that translates its power into contour. At 12.5% ABV it stays slender without ever feeling thin: cool fruit, fine spice and a smoky, stony vein that carries through to the finish.

Terroir and origin

The Achkarrer Schlossberg is one of the six VDP Grand Cru sites from which the Franz Keller estate harvests on the Kaiserstuhl. The steep slope sits on dark volcanic rock that stores the sun's warmth and gives the wine its salty, stony character.

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Noir, vinified dry. The work follows the principle "as little as possible, as much as necessary": strict site selection, minimal intervention in the cellar. Since 2013 this has been supported by the winery built into terraces on the slope, where the harvested grapes are moved gently by gravity. Winemakers Uwe Barnickel and Christian Häuber are responsible for the maturation.

On the palate

Ripe cherry and dark forest berries carry the opening, followed by fine spice and a smoky note from the volcanic rock. The tannin is fine-grained and taut, the finish salty and long.

Food pairings

Pairs with rosy-roasted duck breast, roast pheasant and saddle of venison, as well as braised beef or braised king oyster mushroom.

Special features

The Franz Keller estate has existed since 1892 and farms 35 hectares; since 2016 it has been run by Friedrich Keller in the fourth generation. The Schwarzer Adler restaurant has held a Michelin star continuously for over 55 years. The winery's roof is planted with native plants from the Badberg nature reserve.
