About this wine
Character
The Siccagno DOC 2023 is a dry red wine made from pure Nero d'Avola, produced by Arianna Occhipinti around Vittoria in southeastern Sicily. In Sicilian dialect, siccagno refers to land farmed without irrigation. The wine carries this toughness within it: serious, earthy, driven by quiet energy rather than loud power.
Terroir and origin
The old vines stand on the Vittoria plateau, on the sparse soils of sand, limestone and clay that define Occhipinti's sites. Not a drop of irrigation water has ever reached these vineyards, a radical decision in the Sicilian heat. The roots draw water from deep below, and the wine's concentration comes from the land, not from the cellar.
Grape variety and vinification
Nero d'Avola, Sicily's native red grape, reveals its austere, earthbound side here. Fermentation happens spontaneously with the grapes' own yeasts, and aging involves minimal intervention and no additives. Nothing is over-extracted, nothing smoothed over; the fruit stays vivid, the terroir audible.
On the palate
Juicy and medium-bodied, with dark cherry, blackberry and plum over ripe, firm tannins. Liquorice, clove and Mediterranean herbs give the spicy contour, while the acidity holds it all together. The finish is long and spicy, with a hint of cocoa.
Food pairings
With grilled lamb and herbs, with pasta alla Norma or with an arancino al ragù. Aged pecorino and a simple caponata also pair well.
Special features
Arianna Occhipinti bought her first hectare of abandoned vines at the age of 21 and has farmed around 42 hectares across nine contrade around Vittoria since 2004, biodynamically since 2009.
