About this wine

Character

A sensual, hedonistic red wine whose upfront fruit never feels heavy-handed. Alfredo Arribas plays with overripeness while staying precise enough to keep it balanced. Somni means "dream" in Catalan, and this wine carries the name with both power and finesse.

Terroir and origin

The vines stand in the Priorat at 320 to 360 metres above sea level, on weathered Llicorella slate soils rich in iron. Arribas bought land in the south of the region in 2001, near El Lloar and Bellmunt, and found abandoned terraces planted with ancient, ungrafted vines. Farming is organic and biodynamic, with yields of around one kilogram of grapes per vine.

Grape variety and winemaking

A blend of Cariñena and Syrah, made mainly from old vines. Harvest took place over the first three weeks of October, followed by a berry-by-berry sorting. Fermentation lasted 24 days in steel tanks, followed by twelve months of ageing in large French oak. Cellar master Juan Asens works with spontaneous fermentation, short macerations and minimal use of sulphur, with no new barriques used.

On the palate

Given some air, a ripe bouquet unfolds of cassis, plum, cherry, elderberry, sloe and blood orange, both in liqueur-like and fresh guises. Underneath lie bay leaf and sage, liquorice, mocha, charcoal, peat and dark tobacco. On the palate the wine is equally ripe and rich, yet the cool component makes it invigorating rather than filling. Minerality, fine acidity, elegant oak and fine tannin cushion the fruit.

Food pairing

With partridge in Carignan with Puy lentils, with lamb shoulder with labneh, dates and chickpeas, or with grilled aubergines with lentils, soft eggs and dukkah.

Highlights

Arribas trained as an architect and designed bars and hotels in Barcelona before moving to the Priorat in 2001; he bottled his first wines in 2004. Of the forty hectares at the Clos del Portal estate, only fourteen carry vines, the rest given over to olives, almonds and Mediterranean woodland. This bottle holds 5000ml.
