About this wine
Character
An Extra Brut built on precision rather than padding. The fruit stays juicy, the yeasty note subtle, a broad arc of acidity holding both together. Power and refinement without heaviness, with a long, delicately saline finish.
Terroir and origin
Écueil lies at the heart of the Petite Montagne de Reims, between limestone slopes and a small forest that shelters the microclimate. Géraldine Lacourte and Richard Desvignes farm 8.5 hectares of Premier Cru here in Écueil and Les Mesneux, mostly old Pinot Noir vines on pure limestone, with the slopes mainly south-facing. The oak for the barrels used in the cellar grows in the same forest, just a few hundred metres from the vines.
Grape variety and vinification
The cuvée blends 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay. Hand-harvested, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, the base wines aged in stainless steel, part in barrique from the Écueil forest; malolactic fermentation is not forced. After 30 months on lees, disgorgement took place in January 2021, with the dosage kept lean.
On the palate
The nose opens generously with orange zest, red apple skins and green almonds, alongside autolytic notes of yeast, bread crumb and roasted hazelnuts. On the palate, fine bead, juicy fruit, subtle yeastiness, followed by the long, saline-tinged finish.
Food pairings
Cucumber salad with borage, stale bread, goat's cheese and elderflower dressing, smoked mackerel with gooseberry chutney and crème fraîche or pheasant terrine with Cumberland sauce.
Highlights
The 1500ml magnum, 12.5% Vol. The estate is now in its ninth generation: in 1947 the great-grandparents bottled the first Champagne under their own name, and in 1968 the house received its double name. No pesticides, no herbicides in the vineyard, but preparations made from nettle, horsetail and valerian instead.
