About this wine

Character

In the Chambertin, Trapet Père & Fils seeks not power but finesse. Jean-Louis Trapet, seventh generation of the domaine, works on the principle of accompanying the grapes rather than forcing them. The wine remains bright and clear, its authority quiet.

Terroir and origin

The grapes grow on just under two hectares of the Grand Cru site Chambertin in Gevrey-Chambertin on the Côte de Nuits, spread across three parcels, some planted with century-old vines. Since 1996, Jean-Louis Trapet has farmed his sites biodynamically, with precise soil work and observation rather than intervention.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Pinot Noir. For the Grand Crus, the domaine ferments 50 to 100 percent whole clusters, moving the wine through the cellar by gravity. Ageing uses at most 50 percent new oak, so as not to mask fruit and origin. The alcohol content is 12.5% vol., the wine is dry and bottled in a 1500 ml Magnum.

On the palate

Morello cherry and red forest berries, followed by violet, a smoky trace and damp forest floor. The tannin is fine-grained and silky, the freshness carrying the wine into a saline, chalky finish.

Food pairings

Bresse chicken with morels, classic roast pheasant, or saddle of venison with a restrained jus.

Special features

The family shaped Burgundy winemaking: in the 1880s, Arthur Trapet secretly grafted vines onto American rootstock, at a time when this was still forbidden; the method was legalised in 1888. Jean-Louis Trapet runs the estate's 18.5 hectares with the motto «Les hommes passent et la terre reste».
