About this wine
Character
The Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 bears the signature of Jean-Louis Trapet: aromatic depth, fine-grained tannin, terroir transparency. Not a powerhouse, but a wine of quiet precision that remains dry and upright at 12.5% Vol.
Terroir and origin
Domaine Trapet Père et Fils farms 18.5 hectares in Gevrey-Chambertin, with three Grand Crus forming its heart. The Chambertin comes from just under two hectares, divided into three parcels with some vines a century old, on limestone and clay. The warm, dry summer of 2022 demanded precise work in the vineyard.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir. For the Grand Crus, 50 to 100 percent whole clusters ferment, with the proportion of new oak at most 50 percent. In the cellar, work is done by gravity, observing rather than intervening: guiding, never forcing.
On the palate
Cherry and raspberry, above violet and lavender, beneath undergrowth, earth, cinnamon and cardamom. The tannins are silky and fine-grained, the acidity vibrant, with ripe red berries and plum. The finish stays long and mineral. Opened young, the wine calls for generous decanting; patience rewards it just as well.
Food pairings
Roasted squab breast with truffle sauce, game ragout with root vegetables, roasted wild duck, saddle of venison with wild mushrooms, or bœuf bourguignon. For cheese, aged Époisses and robust Comté pair beautifully.
Distinctive features
In the 1880s, Arthur Trapet secretly grafted vines onto American rootstock; the method was legalized in 1888. Jean-Louis Trapet has led the estate as the seventh generation since the 1990s and has farmed biodynamically since 1996. The Guide des meilleurs vins de France awards it three stars, its highest rating.
