About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir that places finesse above power. Jean-Louis Trapet, seventh generation of the domaine, holds true here too to his credo: guide, never force. The wine has structure without heaviness and depth without opulence, with fine-grained tannin and a clear expression of terroir.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation on the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, where the domaine farms 18.5 hectares. The name of the cuvée refers to 1859, the year the family acquired its first vineyard «en Dérée».
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Pinot Noir. In the cellar, Jean-Louis Trapet works by gravity and with minimal intervention, observation taking precedence over intervention. For the house's Villages wines, the proportion of new oak is 20 to 25 percent, keeping the fruit unadorned. At 12.5% Vol., the wine stays lithe; it is vinified dry.
On the palate
Clear ruby red in the glass, with redcurrant and black cherry on the nose, underpinned by damp earth and cool minerality. Silky texture, fine-grained tannin and a supportive acidity that keeps the wine upright. The magnum format gives it time.
Food pairings
With Bœuf Bourguignon, rosy roasted saddle of venison, braised guinea fowl with wild mushrooms or pheasant breast. To finish, an aged Époisses.
Special features
Since 1996, Jean-Louis Trapet has farmed the vineyards biodynamically. The family history goes back further still: in the 1880s, Arthur Trapet secretly grafted his vines onto American rootstock, forbidden at the time, legal from 1888 and the foundation of modern viticulture. The Guide des meilleurs vins de France awards the domaine three stars, its highest rating.
