About this wine
Character
A Burgundy built on finesse rather than power. Jean-Louis Trapet runs the domaine in its seventh generation according to the principle of guiding the grapes rather than forcing them. In the glass, this translates into fine-grained tannin, cool freshness and aromatic depth, at a dry 12.5% Vol.
Terroir and origin
Domaine Trapet Père & Fils farms 18.5 hectares in Gevrey-Chambertin on the Côte de Nuits. Latricières-Chambertin, alongside Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin, is one of the three Grand Crus that form the heart of the estate. Jean-Louis Trapet has worked biodynamically since 1996, with precise soil work guided by observation rather than intervention.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Pinot Noir. For the Grand Crus, Trapet ferments with 50 to 100 percent whole clusters, with new oak used at no more than 50 percent. In the cellar, work is done by gravity and with a gentle hand.
On the palate
Translucent ruby red with garnet highlights. The nose offers wild berries, ripe morello cherry and violet, with a rocky note underneath. The texture is silky, the tannin fine-grained, the finish long and saline and chalky.
Food pairings
Pink-roasted duck breast, saddle of venison or braised pheasant with wild mushrooms. Also bœuf bourguignon, braised hare or aged Cîteaux cheese.
Special features
In the 1880s, Arthur Trapet secretly grafted vines onto American rootstock, forbidden at the time, legalised in 1888. The Guide des meilleurs vins de France rates the domaine with three stars, the highest score.
