About this wine

Character

The Barbaresco DOCG Roncaglie 2020 is a pure Nebbiolo from a single plot in the commune of Barbaresco, bottled unfiltered by Vietti. Dark, luminous cherry red with a lighter rim, never loud, never coarse in its expression: this wine has substance and length without ever flaunting them.

Terroir and origin

Roncaglie Masseria lies in the commune of Barbaresco, facing southwest, at 280 metres above sea level over limestone and clay. The vines average 35 years of age. Vietti in Castiglione Falletto has existed since 1873; from 1961 onward Alfredo Currado vinified individual vineyards separately, and the Barbaresco Masseria was among the region's first cru wines.

Grape variety and vinification

The grapes were harvested on 29 September, followed by gentle pressing. The must ferments on the skins in steel tanks; including cold maceration, the process takes around a month, with the cap of skins punched down continuously. Malolactic fermentation takes place after the wine is moved into the oak casks. Ageing lasts nearly 30 months, mostly in large oak casks, complemented by barriques.

On the palate

The fruit sits between red and dark: sour cherry dominates, alongside redcurrant, raspberry, plum and blackberry, plus rosehip and barberry. Earthy beetroot, plenty of spice from juniper, black pepper, cinnamon and clove, then the forest: pine cones, pine bark, fir needles, undergrowth, forest floor. Very delicately, freshly ground coffee, cigar box and light tobacco leaves. On the palate it flows slowly, the tannin is fine, the acidity delicate, minerality defining the long finish.

Food pairing recommendations

Pairs well with roasted saddle of venison with pickled cherries and celery-carrot vegetables, grilled presa ibérica with orange-fennel or red wine risotto with roasted hazelnuts and pecorino.
