About this wine

Character

The Barolo DOCG Cerequio 2020 from Vietti is a single-varietal Nebbiolo from a south-facing site in the commune of Barolo, marked by a cool character and inner poise. The aromatics open deep and floral: hibiscus and violet lead, followed by morello cherry, blackberry, plum and a touch of sloe. Earthy and vegetal notes follow with beetroot, celeriac, undergrowth and pine needles, rounded off by a fine spice of pepper and juniper.

Terroir and origin

Cerequio is an MGA site of great significance in Piedmont. The south-facing plot, at 320 metres above sea level, covers around one hectare; the subsoil is defined by calcareous marl, overlaid with a generous layer of clay. The vines average 37 years of age. From Castiglione Falletto, Vietti farms 75 hectares across nine crus.

Grape variety and vinification

Nebbiolo, harvested on 30 September. Gently pressed, the must ferments on the skins for around a month in steel tank, with the cap of skins punched down continuously. Malolactic fermentation takes place after transfer to oak. Ageing lasts almost 30 months, mostly in large oak casks, complemented by small barriques. Bottled without any filtration. 14.5% vol., dry.

On the palate

Fine-grained tannin and sharply honed acidity duel on equal terms. The texture stays silky and velvety, dense and cool at once, with the tangy fruit intensifying without any single note stepping forward. The finish is long, carrying a touch of eucalyptus.

Food pairings

Recommended with cod fried skin-side down with beetroot cream and roasted hazelnuts, with grilled lamb cutlet with artichoke bottoms and olive-thyme nage, or with lukewarm bulgur with black olives and mint.

Special features

In 1961, Alfredo Currado vinified grapes from individual vineyards separately, creating one of the first Barolo crus. Since 1974, bottles from the estate, founded in 1873, have carried original artworks by artists.
