About this wine

Character

Brilliant cherry red with violet and rust-coloured hues. The nose builds slowly, full of spice and earthiness: allspice, red pepper and juniper, along with beetroot, forest floor and brushwood. The sweet fruit expands exuberantly into sweet cherry, raspberry and redcurrant; with patience, rosehip and red fruit tea emerge as well.

Terroir and origin

The Lazzarito vineyard lies in the commune of Serralunga d'Alba. The plot resembles an amphitheatre and faces southwest. At 330 to 380 metres above sea level, the Nebbiolo vines are planted at a density of 4,500 vines per hectare on calcareous to clay soil. Vietti owns around two hectares of it.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Nebbiolo, harvested in early October. Gently pressed, the must ferments with the skins for about a month in steel tanks, with the cap of skins continuously punched down. After transfer to the oak casks, malolactic fermentation takes place there. Ageing lasts nearly 30 months, mostly in large oak casks, complemented by barriques. Bottling takes place without any filtration.

On the palate

The wine carries these impressions through without loss. Wild and untamed from the very first sip, driven by a lively acid structure that defines the Lazzarito. Fruit and spice step back two notches, leaving the stage to earthiness, origin and elegance. The finish picks up the spice of the nose, with greater intensity.

Food pairings

Beef tenderloin Rossini with truffled potato gratin, oven-roasted spring chicken with Périgord truffle and creamy salsify or grilled celery with café de Paris butter.
