About this wine
Character
A Barolo that places origin and structure above fruit. It builds wild and untamed, yet remains composed within itself and never overreaches.
Terroir and origin
The parcel lies within the Lazzarito vineyard in the commune of Serralunga d'Alba, shaped like an amphitheatre and facing southwest. The Nebbiolo vines grow at 330 to 380 metres above sea level on calcareous to clay soil, with a planting density of 4,500 vines per hectare. Vietti owns roughly two hectares here.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Nebbiolo, harvested in early October. After gentle pressing, must and skins ferment for about a month in steel tank, with the cap of skins continuously punched down. Malolactic fermentation takes place directly in oak casks. Ageing lasts nearly 30 months, mostly in large oak casks with some barriques. The wine is bottled without any filtration. 14.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
The nose is spicy and earthy: allspice, red pepper and juniper over forest floor, brushwood and beetroot. The sweet fruit arrives late and wild, as sweet cherry, raspberry and redcurrant, revealing with patience in the glass notes of rosehip and red fruit tea. On the palate, acidity leads the way, with fruit and spice stepping two paces back to let the earthiness take centre stage. The finish echoes the impressions from the nose.
Food pairings
Beef fillet Rossini with truffled potato gratin, oven-roasted poussin with Périgord truffle and creamy salsify, or, for a vegetarian option, grilled celeriac with café de Paris butter.
Highlights
Vietti, based in Castiglione Falletto, has existed since 1873. In 1961, Alfredo Currado was the first to vinify grapes from individual vineyards separately, and since 1974 the bottles have carried original artworks by artists. In 2025, Doctor Wine named the estate Azienda dell'Anno.
