About this wine
Character
A cool, delicate Barolo that draws its impact from finesse rather than power. Perfumed fruit, precise spice, never loud, yet of great length.
Terroir and origin
Monvigliero lies in Verduno, in the northern part of the Barolo appellation, and is historically regarded as the commune's most important cru. The MGA site sits at 240 metres above sea level on very clayey calcareous marl, facing south to southwest. The vines average 65 years of age.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Nebbiolo, harvested on 30 September. 40 percent of the grapes are destemmed, while the dominant 60 percent go into the steel tank as whole clusters. After a few days of cold maceration, the temperature is raised and fermentation lasts around twenty days with regular pump-overs. Malolactic fermentation already takes place in oak. Ageing lasts nearly 24 months in large oak casks, complemented by small barriques; bottled without any filtration.
On the palate
An extraordinarily fine-grained tannin coats the palate, while incisive acidity stretches the wine out. The red fruit appears open and earthy, more tea-like than ripe berry, with pale-hued beetroot. The spice remains understated yet still lends structure. 14.0% ABV, dry.
Food pairings
Beetroot carpaccio with goat cheese cream, fermented redcurrants and dill, venison ham with lamb's lettuce and raspberry vinegar vinaigrette or beef onglet with a white bean and lentil cassoulet.
