About this wine
Character
A bright, delicately structured Barolo from the Ravera vineyard that tells its origin through fruit and spice rather than power. Redcurrant, wild raspberry and sour cherry are omnipresent, joined by barberry and currant, white pepper and, in lighter touches, allspice and juniper. Dried Mediterranean herbs play a subtle role, with cocoa butter, milk chocolate, undergrowth and forest floor in the background.
Terroir and origin
The Ravera vineyard belongs to the commune of Novello. On abundant calcareous marl, the vines face west to southwest at 400 metres above sea level. Vietti holds 2.4 hectares here, with an average vine age of 35 years; the oldest section was planted in 1935.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Nebbiolo, harvested on 8 and 9 October. After gentle pressing, the must ferments with the skins for around three weeks in steel tanks, with the cap of skins continuously punched down. Malolactic fermentation takes place after transfer to the oak casks. Ageing lasts almost 30 months, mostly in large oak casks, complemented by small barriques. The wine is bottled without any filtration, to mature further in the bottle.
On the palate
Silky smooth, carried by an acid structure that shapes the wine lastingly without ever pushing forward. The tannin does not deny its Nebbiolo character but proves strikingly soft. It works the palate with persistence, and the finish reveals noticeably darker, spicier fruit. Depth and length suggest decades of further development.
Food recommendations
Crepinettes of saddle of lamb with savoy cabbage and glazed peach, turbot fillet with poached goose egg and morels or fettuccine with white truffle and egg yolk.
Special features
Vietti in Castiglione Falletto has combined wine culture with art since 1873; since 1974 the bottles have featured original artworks, including those by Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 1961, Alfredo Currado vinified individual vineyards separately, creating one of the first Barolo crus. In 2025, Doctor Wine named Vietti Azienda dell'Anno.
