About this wine
Character
Concentrated and densely structured, yet juicy, elegant and never opulent. Artadi is among the pioneers of Spain's shift from cellar-driven to terroir-driven wines, and this single-varietal Tempranillo carries the house style into a large format: length, depth and tension rather than sheer power.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from several vineyards in the municipalities of Laguardia and Elvillar. Some of the plots lie at 450 metres in the warmer Ebro valley, while others reach up to 700 metres into the cooler climate of the Sierra Cantabria. The soils are partly calcareous, partly clay, partly stony; this diversity produces a multi-layered wine that exemplifies Rioja Alavesa.
Grape variety and winemaking
Pure Tempranillo from organically farmed vines. Herbicides and synthetic chemicals are excluded, and some plots are still worked with horses. In the cellar, Artadi ferments in open vessels for gentle extraction; ageing lasts 12 months in oak barrels. In its youth, the wine benefits noticeably from decanting.
On the palate
Powerful and firm, with more dark than red fruit, as is typical of Rioja Alavesa's higher-altitude sites. Precise acidity keeps the medium body taut, an earthy minerality lends depth, and chalky tannin defines the long finish.
Food pairing
With saddle of venison and other game, as well as summer salads.
Special features
The wine is organic certified (ES-ECO-026-VAS) and is made in Laguardia, in the same cellar for forty years. At the end of 2015, Artadi left the DOCa Rioja, whose regulations did not even permit naming individual vineyards on the back label. Since then, the label states the origin rather than the ageing category. Magnum with 1500 ml, 14.5% ABV, dry.
