About this wine

Character

A Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits that favours clarity over power. "I look for neither colour nor tannin," says Bruno Clavelier, and the wine bears this out: a translucent structure, delicate spice, a quiet, long finish.

Terroir and origin

The domaine sits without a sign along the Route Nationale on the edge of Vosne-Romanée, farming 6.5 hectares across the communes of the Côte de Nuits. The vines were planted in the 1930s and 1940s, after the phylloxera catastrophe; the oldest are now over 80 years old. They root deep into the limestone subsoil and naturally yield low quantities.

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Noir Fin, the traditional Burgundian clone. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in open, conical oak vats, with up to 30 percent whole clusters and manual punch-downs instead of mechanical extraction, over roughly three weeks. Malolactic fermentation follows in spring. The wine then spends 16 to 18 months in barrels of Tronçais and Allier oak, a third of them new. Bottling is done under protective gas, unfined, unfiltered, with minimal sulphur.

On the palate

Silky texture, dark cherry and violet, alongside fine spices and a cool minerality. The wine stays lean and precise, with the oak never stepping forward.

Food pairing

With pink-roasted beef fillet, breast of pheasant, or bœuf bourguignon. For cheese, aged Comté and Époisses.

Special features

Organic-certified (Ecocert) since 1999, biodynamic farming since 2005. Each climat is vinified separately, and every wine from the domaine carries the Vieilles Vignes designation. 13.0% vol., dry.
