About this wine
Character
A highly concentrated, viscous dessert wine from Burgenland, its density effortlessly carried by vibrant acidity. Dark amber in the glass, with a sweet nose that remains remarkably light on its feet.
Terroir and Origin
The grapes grow in the Seewinkel on Lake Neusiedl, where persistent autumn morning fogs and high humidity foster the development of noble rot (Botrytis). Heinz and Roland Velich run their estate in Apetlon, Burgenland, at the south-eastern tip of the lake: a Pannonian climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters, on soils of limestone and gravel interspersed with sand.
Grape Variety and Vinification
100% Welschriesling, harvested exclusively from raisin-like, shrivelled berries. The must ferments spontaneously and matures for over ten years in used barriques. Heinz Velich works with minimal yields, selects meticulously, and eschews oenological trickery.
On the Palate
The nose reveals pipe tobacco, dried dates, figs, plums, and apricots, complemented by candied ginger and oranges, honey, white nougat, malt, and mocha. On the palate, the wine glides with a rich, creamy texture, impeccably balanced between sweetness, vibrant acidity, and a pronounced salinity. The extensive oak ageing provides structure and a hint of roasted almonds with vanilla; the finish is remarkably persistent, concluding with the delicate bitterness and sweetness of candied bitter orange peel.
Food Pairings
Pairs wonderfully with grilled pineapple in puff pastry, foie gras crème brûlée with foie gras praline, and pear and Roquefort tart.
Special Features
Sweet wines of this calibre are only crafted at Velich when the vintage conditions are ideal. This 375 ml half-bottle comes in at 13.5% ABV.
