About this wine
Character
The Zero Brut Nature is the entry point into the Champagne portfolio of Champagne Tarlant in Œuilly and is bottled with absolutely no dosage. Medium straw yellow, fine perlage. It has aromas of yellow cellar apples and poached pears, torrone and hazelnuts, bay leaf and sweet gale. Seven years of ageing lie behind it, yet it still comes across as youthful and energetic.
Terroir and origin
The estate has existed since 1687 and is run in its twelfth generation by Benoît and Mélanie Tarlant: 14 hectares, divided into more than 55 parcels. The vines are rooted in Lutetian limestone, chalk and quartz sand. Farming is organic, without herbicides or synthetic pesticides.
Grape variety and vinification
32% each of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier, plus a combined 4% of Pinot Blanc, Arbanne and Petit Meslier. Slow gravity pressing, spontaneous fermentation, six months on the lees in Burgundian pièces, no malolactic fermentation. Reserve wines from a Réserve Perpétuelle were used in the blend. Bottled in May 2016, disgorged in February 2022 with 0 g dosage.
On the palate
Full, powerful, forceful. The acidity draws a wide arc, staying present and lively, and the mineral character is equally agile. Dry and chalky, yet supple and fine in its long-matured perlage. An impressive statement.
Food pairings
Cod ceviche with lime, tiger's milk, wild herbs and cape gooseberries, tuna tataki with shiso and brown butter, and burrata with marinated yellow beetroot and almond oil.
Special features
Jean-Mary Tarlant began bottling Champagne with zero dosage in the late 1970s, at a time when he was mocked for it. Today, 90 percent of production is Brut Nature, meaning no sugar is added after the second fermentation. 12.0% vol., 1500 ml magnum.
