About this wine

Character

A Champagne that takes the juicy side of Pinot Meunier seriously: complex, precisely structured, with density and length. Balance over power, fruit with backbone.

Terroir and origin

The La Grosse Pierre plot lies in Ludes, on the eastern side of the Montagne de Reims. Chalk soil covered by a very fine layer of clay, home to vines more than 55 years old. Pierre Huré tends the ten hectares of premier cru vineyards in Ludes and Villedommange, while his brother François has run the cellar since 2008.

Grape variety and vinification

The 4 éléments series stands for one plot, one grape variety, one vintage and its own vinification. Here, pure Pinot Meunier, aged after fermentation for 18 months in demi-muids — 600-litre oak barrels — in which malolactic fermentation was blocked. After tirage, the wine rested under natural cork until April 2025. Then 1,956 bottles were disgorged and given a dosage of 1.2 grams.

On the palate

In the glass, an intense straw yellow with a fine perlage. The nose offers red and yellow apples, cider apples and cellar apples with skin, along with orange zest, kumquats, mirabelles, red berries, foliage, hay, stone, petrichor and fresh farmhouse bread crust. The fruit stays open and inviting, with a touch of the exotic; the acidity feels ripe while still delivering just the right amount of drive. The finest autolytic notes and matching spice carry the long, dense finish.

Special features

2019 was demanding: 20°C in February, late frosts in April, two heatwaves in July reaching up to 43°C. Yields stayed low, while acidity and sugar levels were nearly perfect at harvest. That a wine of such clarity emerged is down to the old vines and the principle of letting a single grape variety and plot speak without blending. 12.0% vol.
