About this wine

Character

A red wine from Montsant that is dense yet finely honed: elegant, refined, highly drinkable. Cool, stony attributes define it more than sheer power, and in the glass it shows a sparkling, dark cherry red.

Terroir and origin

The vines grow in El Masroig in southern Montsant on sandy and clay soils, with vines a hundred years old. Alfredo Arribas farms over 80 hectares between Priorat and Montsant, many vines still on their original rootstock.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Carignan from old vines. In the cellar, restraint is the guiding principle: native yeasts, short maceration, minimal sulphur. Winemaker Juan Asens follows the line of as little intervention as possible, as much as necessary. 14.0% vol., dry.

On the palate

On the nose, blackberry, sour cherry, cassis and elderberry, joined by rosehip and beetroot for earthy nuances, rooibos tea for depth, a hint of coconut alongside black pepper, and finally black olive and rosemary; the animal nuances suit the wine well. The fruit stays juicy, tangy and taut, the tannin fine and harmoniously integrated. Acidity and minerality work together, and the finish turns saline, bringing notes of red fruit tea.

Food pairings

Grilled entrecôte with peppers and chimichurri, pan-seared red mullet with beetroot and walnut salad or caramelised carrots with ras el hanout and quinoa.

Distinctive features

Alfredo Arribas, an architect from Barcelona, launched his wine project in 2001 and bottled his first vintage in 2004. Vineyard work is organic and increasingly biodynamic — for him, simply precise craftsmanship.
