About this wine
Character
A Burgundy without theatrics: clear, juicy fruit, fine austerity and that taut, saline line that is the house's signature. Slender in build yet deep, with the substance to age for years in the cellar.
Terroir and origin
Aloxe-Corton lies at the foot of the Corton hill. Domaine Bruno Clair, based in Marsannay-la-Côte, farms 27 hectares across eight villages of the Côte d'Or and produces 32 appellations. The estate traces back to Clair-Daü, formed in 1919 through the marriage of Joseph Clair and Marguerite Daü; in 1986 Bruno Clair founded his own estate with seven hectares.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir. Spontaneous fermentation is standard, 20 to 50 percent whole clusters go into the fermentation vat, and extraction remains measured. This is followed by 18 to 20 months in barrique with 20 to 50 percent new oak. Time takes care of clarification: the wines rest long enough to be bottled without cosmetic adjustments.
On the palate
Dark cherry and red berries, with fine spice. The tannin stays silky, the mineral line carries long, and at 13.0 % vol. the wine remains dry and without heaviness.
Food pairings
With duck breast, saddle of venison, coq au vin or mushroom risotto. For cheese, Comté and a mild Époisses work well.
Special features
Since 2010 son Edouard has worked at the estate, and in 2018 Margaux and Arthur joined, responsible for the vineyard and vinification, cellar ageing and shipping. The sixth generation is increasing the share of whole clusters and lowering sulphur use. Cover crops and forgoing herbicides have long been standard practice.
