About this wine
Character
The Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2020 is a still-closed Nebbiolo that calls for decanting and a large glass. The fruit then builds slowly: sour cherry, blackberry and plum, with rosehip and red fruit tea. Spice notes of cigar box, pale tobacco leaves and mixed peppercorns, alongside sage, parsley and thyme, as well as resinous notes of pine, cypress and fir over a pronounced earthiness.
Terroir and origin
The winery is located in the village of Barolo, close to the Cannubi cru. Chiara Boschis holds 0.7 hectares there on Tertiary limestone soils, at nearly 300 metres altitude, facing south to southwest. The vines were planted in 1982 with the Michet, Lampia and Rosé clones; the estate has been organically certified since 2014.
Grape variety and vinification
100% Nebbiolo. Harvest began on 22 September 2020, with yields 30 to 40 percent below a normal year. Fermentation takes place entirely in stainless steel tanks with pump-overs and punch-downs, aged in small, lightly toasted French oak barriques with around 30% new oak, followed by a year of bottle ageing. 3,774 bottles and 340 magnums were produced.
On the palate
Fine-grained tannin coats the mouth, the crisp fruit flows silkily, and delicate acidity quietly sets the pace. The minerality is linear, with balsamic and ethereal notes carrying the finish for minutes, closing on cocoa.
Food pairings
Roast venison in a nut crust with bread dumplings and cranberries, grilled tomahawk steak with romanesco and sweet potatoes, or stewed grey lentils with foie gras and hazelnuts.
Special features
Chiara Boschis took over the management of E.Pira & Figli in 1990 and was the only woman among the Barolo Boys. In the Cannubi cru, she was the first to switch to organic farming and, with the Cannubi Bio project, won over around 80 percent of that cru's growers to organic viticulture by 2015.
