About this wine
Character
The Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2021 is a pure varietal Nebbiolo from the heart of the Barolo appellation: balanced and elegant, with warm, ripe fruit, flawlessly silky tannin and clear, fresh acidity. Sensuousness and structure are evenly matched here, a great vintage.
Terroir and origin
Cannubi is considered perhaps the most famous vineyard in Barolo. The south-facing slope and a striking sand content in the soil give the grapes exceptional intensity and lend the wine its harmony. Chiara Boschis farms 0.7 hectares here, planted in 1982 with the Nebbiolo clones Michet, Lampia and Rosé.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Nebbiolo. Harvest began in early October and was completed by 12 October. Fermentation took place in rotary tanks with two pump-overs per day, 14 days on the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation in steel tank. This was followed by two years of ageing in large casks and barriques of French oak. 14.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
Garnet red, medium transparency. On the nose plum, cherry and cherry stone, red berries, marzipan, mint, a touch of eucalyptus and candied lavender, plus a hint of iron. On the palate, blue fruit, floral notes, wood and earth.
Food pairing recommendations
With braised beef, saddle of venison and aged Castelmagno.
Special features
Chiara Boschis took over E.Pira & Figli in 1990, becoming the first woman to own and run a winery in the Langhe; the estate has been organically certified since 2014. She was the first to convert the Cannubi vineyard and, with the Cannubi Bio project, won over around 80 percent of the winegrowers in this vineyard by 2015. About 300 cases are produced each year, and this double magnum holds 3000 ml.
