About this wine

Character

The Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2021 comes from the heart of the appellation and shows sensuality and structure at once. Garnet red, medium transparency, balanced and elegant, a calmly flowing wine from a great vintage.

Terroir and origin

Cannubi is perhaps Barolo's most famous vineyard. Chiara Boschis farms 0.7 hectares there, planted in 1982 with the Michet, Lampia and Rosé clones. The south-facing site and a notably high sand content in the soil give the grapes their exceptional intensity and the wine its harmony. Around 300 cases are produced per year, no more.

Grape variety and vinification

Nebbiolo in the Michet and Lampia variants. Harvest began in early October and was completed on 12 October. Fermentation took place in rotary tanks with two pump-overs a day and 14 days on the skins; malolactic fermentation also took place in steel. This is followed by two years of ageing in French oak casks and barriques.

On the palate

On the nose, iron and blood, plums, cherries and cherry stones, a touch of marzipan, plus red berries, mint, a touch of eucalyptus and candied lavender. The palate opens with warm, ripe fruit and floral notes, the tannin is flawlessly silky, the acidity clear and fresh. Once again a hint of iron, plus blue fruit, a touch of wood and earth.

Distinctive features

Chiara Boschis took over the estate in 1990, the only woman among the Barolo Boys: shorter maceration times, barriques, wines that were more approachable early on. Her first vintage, 1990, won the Tre Bicchieri. The estate has been organically certified since 2014, and she has run it together with her brother Giorgio since 2010. With the Cannubi Bio project, she brought around 80 percent of the growers in this cru to convert to organic farming by 2015.
