About this wine

Character

A great, dark Barolo full of elegance and length. Spice defines it without masking the fruit, while power and fine-grained tannin remain in balance.

Terroir and origin

The Mosconi vineyard is one of the oldest Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive in Monforte d'Alba. Chiara Boschis farms 1.9 hectares there at 370 metres altitude, entirely south-facing. In the 2020 vintage, sufficient warmth, long daylight hours and cool nights came together, with yields 30 to 40 percent below a regular year. Harvest came late, on 2 October 2020.

Grape variety and vinification

100 percent Nebbiolo, fermented entirely in stainless steel tanks with frequent pump-overs and punch-downs. Ageing takes place in small French oak barriques with rather light toasting and around 30 percent new wood, followed by a year of bottle maturation. All of the estate's Barolos follow the same method, so that the origin speaks rather than the winemaking technique.

On the palate

It builds with pressure and power, the fine-grained tannin is present yet stays unobtrusive. The acidity carries the wine, keeps the fruit taut and ensures great drinkability, while juniper, pepper and clove, rosemary, thyme and sage as well as roasted coffee and black truffle repeatedly come to the fore. Behind them stand sweet cherry, blackberry and elderberry, together with a fine mineral structure and a finish that lingers for minutes.

Food pairings

Tagliatelle with veal ragù and olives, braised ox cheeks with creamy polenta and mostarda, or salt-baked beetroot with raspberry vinaigrette and capers.

Special features

Chiara Boschis was the first woman to own and run a winery in the Langhe, and as the only woman among the Barolo Boys she championed shorter maceration times and the use of barriques. The estate has been organically certified since 2014, and since 2010 she has run it together with her brother Giorgio. The 2020 vintage yielded 9,826 bottles and 278 magnums.
