About this wine
Character
A Barolo that shows its power not through sheer force but through pressure, depth and a finely grained tannin structure. Alongside the dark fruit sits a light floral perfume that gives the wine movement. It is built for long ageing, all the more so in this 3000ml double magnum format.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow on the oldest plots of the Mosconi vineyard in Monforte d'Alba, across three hectares at around 400 metres altitude. The soil consists of slightly grey calcareous clay marls that alternate with siliceous sandstones; where calcium carbonate and iron are present, the colour warms and takes on a faint pink tinge. These soils give the wine its structure and its capacity for long ageing, while the cooler nights shape the finely grained tannin.
Grape variety and vinification
Nebbiolo in the Michet and Lampia variants. Harvest began in early October and was completed by 12 October. Fermentation took place in rotary tanks with two pump-overs per day and 14 days on the skins, with malolactic fermentation also carried out in steel. This was followed by two years of ageing in large casks and barriques of French oak. 14.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
The nose is as dark as the barely transparent colour: cassis, blackberry and blueberry, matured meat, lavender and violet, leather, undergrowth, a touch of liquorice, tobacco and mint. On the palate it is juicy, firm and lively, with plenty of pressure and substance, gripping, with spice and earthy notes within the dark fruit. The tannins are finely grained, the structure remains clearly defined.
Distinctive features
Chiara Boschis took over management in 1990, becoming the first woman to own and run a winery in the Langhe, and was the only woman among the Barolo Boys: green harvesting to reduce yields, shorter maceration, ageing in French barriques. Since 2014 the estate has worked exclusively to certified organic standards, and since 2010 she has run it together with her brother Giorgio. The 3000ml double magnum is a rare format.
