About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir of silky texture and clear contours. The wines from Les Grèves are considered the richest, most structured and longest-lived of the appellation; this one reveals its depth without heaviness and is already enjoyable to drink.
Terroir and origin
At 31.33 hectares, Les Grèves is the largest climat in the heart of Beaune. The Morey family's vine rows, in their possession since 1969, stretch 450 metres up the slope. The terrain shifts from a rather sandy soil to one more strongly defined by gravel.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, planted partly in 1976 and partly in 1988 from a sélection massale. The largely destemmed grapes ferment with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrel and tank, with malolactic fermentation starting on its own. The proportion of new oak is around 20%. Sulphur is added only during the final six months in barrel, in several minimal doses, so that the wine never exceeds 35 mg/l. It is neither fined nor filtered.
On the palate
The nose reveals dark raspberries and cherries, along with stone, cinnamon, light touches of tar and game, the oak perfectly integrated. The palate remains juicy and clear, sensual and silky, with fine, veiled tannin, again a hint of tar, delicately ripe fruit, fine acid tension and a slight pungency on the finish.
Special features
Thomas Morey represents the tenth generation of a family rooted in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1643 and, since founding his own estate in 2007 with his wife Sylvie, has farmed 13 hectares across seven villages of the Côte de Beaune. He began organic farming in 2011. The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti entrusts him with tending its vines in Le Montrachet Grand Cru.
