About this wine
Character
A brilliantly pale Chardonnay with distinctly citrus accents, a touch of pome and stone fruit, fine oak and spice notes, stony minerality and a hint of pastry. Finely chiselled, with only very subtle reduction in the background and an energy that carries this young vintage.
Terroir and origin
The wine comes from nine parcels in Chassagne-Montrachet, mostly from Les Houillères, with small amounts from En Journoblot and from declassified Premiers Crus. Les Houillères was planted in 1989 via sélection massale and lies on flat, deep soils of a red clay-limestone mix, as an extension of the Les Enceignères climat on the upper slope of the hill. This parcel ripens very early and is therefore almost always harvested first.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay, fermented with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrel and tank. Malolactic fermentation proceeds naturally, after which the wine rests on its lees entirely without bâtonnage. The proportion of new oak is around 20%. Sulphur is added only during the last six months in barrel, in several small doses, so the wine never exceeds 35 mg/l. 13.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Elegant and juicy, round, silky and dense, with a clear structure and precise body. A gripping acidity and vivid minerality set the direction, the oak stays in the background, and the finish carries a mouth-watering salinity.
Distinctive features
Thomas Morey represents the tenth generation of a family settled in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1643, and since 2007 has run, together with his wife Sylvie, 13 hectares across seven villages of the Côte de Beaune. On behalf of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, he tends their vines in Le Montrachet Grand Cru.
