About this wine
Character
A hedonistic, open Chardonnay that shows Thomas Morey's signature in its most accessible form: fruit before structure, minerality before acid tension. The 2023 vintage is precisely reflected here, along with the warmth that the southern portion of the cuvée brings.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from various parcels in Chassagne-Montrachet, where Thomas Morey has run his own estate together with his wife Sylvie since 2007, complemented by 10% from Mâcon and 15% from the Chalonnais. In total, the Domaine farms 13 hectares across seven villages of the Côte de Beaune, farmed organically since 2011 and organic-certified since 2017.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrel and tank, with malolactic fermentation occurring naturally. The wine remains on its lees without any bâtonnage, with new oak accounting for around 20%. Sulfur is added only during the last six months in barrel, in several minimal doses, so that the wine never exceeds 35 mg/l.
On the palate
The opening reveals a subtle note of gunflint over aromatic fruit, then ripe, juicy citrus fruits, apricot, yellow plum and yellow pear, along with almond and nut. On the palate, juicy and fruity, with hints of tea, light smokiness and yellow fruit. The minerality carries the wine further than the acidity.
Distinctive features
The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has entrusted Thomas Morey with the care of its vines in Le Montrachet Grand Cru. The Bourgogne Chardonnay is the entry point into this portfolio and carries the same approach: spontaneous fermentation, no sulfur during fermentation, deliberately restrained use of oak.
