About this wine
Character
A Blaufränkisch that demands time, air, and a large glass. It then unfolds dark ruby red, with precise dark berry fruit, peppery spice, and earthy notes that keep it grounded. It boasts ample power yet wields it with restraint: 13.0% ABV, dry, without the slightest hint of heaviness.
Terroir and Origin
The grapes originate from old vineyards on the Leitha Mountains near Breitenbrunn in Burgenland. The slopes face southeast, gently sloping toward Lake Neusiedl, with a subsoil composed of fossil-rich limestone, calcareous sandstone, and mica schist. This cool, stony foundation accounts for the wine's remarkable tension.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Single-varietal Blaufränkisch, hand-harvested in early October. The mash fermented spontaneously and remained in wooden fermentation vats for three weeks, followed by gentle pressing in a basket press. The wine then matured for 28 months in used 500-litre oak casks, allowing it to breathe rather than masking it with oak aromas.
On the Palate
Powerful and grippy, with a density entirely free of heaviness. It commands the palate with intricate, precise detail. The finish is long and stony.
Food Pairings
Pairs wonderfully with braised venison ragout, slow-cooked beef cheeks, or medium-rare beef fillet, as well as with mature mountain cheese.
Special Features
Gernot and Heike Heinrich have farmed their estate in Gols biodynamically since 2006, earning Demeter certification in 2017; in 2009, they were co-founders of respekt-BIODYN, under whose guidelines the Edelgraben vineyards are also cultivated. What started as two hectares has grown to one hundred—parcel by parcel, often on sites that others had abandoned.
