About this wine
Character
A red wine that draws its power from structure rather than opulence: dry, 13.5% ABV, with dark fruit, spice and a minerality that carries the entire wine.
Terroir and Origin
The Alter Berg single vineyard is located on a south-east facing slope in Winden am Leithagebirge. Cooling forest stands above the hillside, Lake Neusiedl lies below, and giant cherry trees grow within the vine rows. The barren limestone soil is interspersed with fossil remnants from the primeval sea millions of years old.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Pure Blaufränkisch from careful biodynamic cultivation, hand-harvested from mid to late September. Spontaneous fermentation, three weeks on the skins in amphora, followed by gentle pressing in a basket press. This is followed by 42 months of maturation in amphora and used 500-litre oak casks.
On the Palate
On the nose, black cherries, blackberries, blueberries, sloe and jostaberry; with aeration, leather, tobacco, wood smoke and liquorice emerge, underpinned by wild herbs. On the palate, the wine takes a firm grip, tannins and acidity are animating yet polished, the cherry and berry fruit remains present, and the minerality defines the finish. Excellent ageing potential.
Food Pairings
A companion to rich braised dishes and grilled meats.
Special Features
Gernot and Heike Heinrich manage one hundred hectares from Gols, farmed biodynamically since 2006. The winery has been Demeter-certified since 2017 and is a founding member of respekt-BIODYN. In the cellar, gravity replaces pumps; alongside the clay amphorae stand used oak casks crafted by local cooper Klaus Pauscha.
