About this wine

Character

A Grand Cru of dark spice and graphite, slender in build yet deep. Clear, juicy fruit stands against a fine austerity, the tannin stays silky, the saline line carries through to a mineral finish. A wine for the table that gains complexity with age.

Terroir and origin

Bonnes-Mares lies in the Côte de Nuits. Bruno Clair farms 1.64 hectares here, expanded with additional parcels in 2006; the site ranks among the domaine's finest holdings. It yields darker spice, graphite and a broader tannic structure. The estate, based in Marsannay-la-Côte, spans 27 hectares across eight villages of the Côte d'Or and 32 appellations.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Pinot Noir. Fermentation starts spontaneously, extraction stays measured, with 20 to 50 percent whole clusters going into the vat. This is followed by 18 to 20 months in barrel with 20 to 50 percent new oak. Time handles the clarification: the wine rests long enough to be bottled without correction.

On the palate

Dry, 13.0% vol. Blackberry and black cherry carry the opening, underscored by graphite, herbal spice and undergrowth. The tannin is fine-grained and broad, the finish long and saline.

Food pairing recommendations

With roast venison in dark jus, seared duck breast, braised leg of lamb or coq au vin. Equally with truffle dishes and aged cheeses such as Époisses and Comté.

Special features

Cover crops and the avoidance of herbicides have long been standard practice at the domaine. Son Edouard joined in 2010, followed by Margaux and Arthur in 2018; the sixth generation is increasing the share of whole clusters and working with less sulphur. Allocations remain scarce.
